MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday congratulated new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer and his Labour Party for dominating the parliamentary elections.

“On behalf of the Philippines, I extend my warmest congratulations to the Labour Party and Keir Starmer,” the President said in a post on X.

“We wish the new government success and look forward to further strengthening our deep and longstanding ties,” he said.

Earlier this week, Starmer and his party secured a landslide victory, ending the 14-year rule of the Conservative Party and prompting former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to vacate the post.

Starmer is an Oxford-educated human rights lawyer, who represented death row convicts, and eventually became Chief Prosecutor.

He was first elected to the British Parliament in 2015, and served as the Shadow Immigration Minister from 2015 to 2016.

He later on worked as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union (Brexit) from 2016 to 2020.

In his first speech as Prime Minister, Starmer vowed to deliver change, “national renewal and a return of politics to public service.”

“The work of change begins immediately, but have no doubt, we will rebuild Britain,” the 61-year-old British leader said.

Last year, Marcos Jr. flew to the United Kingdom to attend King Charles III’s coronation.

Then-Prime Minister Sunak committed to schedule a “proper” trip for Marcos Jr.

The Filipino leader earlier said that he hopes to discuss how Manila and London can strengthen its bilateral and trade relations.
