AFP also wants confiscated firearms returned

MANILA (UPDATED) — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is demanding the Chinese government pay P60 million for the damage caused by the China Coast Guard to Philippine assets during a June 17 sea clash.

The Philippines and China forces figured in a violent clash in the West Philippine Sea after the former's resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin shoal was intercepted by the CCG.

Chinese forces allegedly destroyed 2 motorboats, as well as the personal belongings of Filipino Navy officers, and confiscated some of their firearms.

The AFP is also demanding the return of seven firearms confiscated by the China Coast Guard.

"Sumulat na po ako sa ating [Defense secretary] so that my letter could be transmitted to the DFA for them to reach out to their counterparts in China... Illegal acts po itong mga ginawa nila so dapat managot sila, dapat panagutan nila,” said AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. during a press conference at Camp Aguinaldo.

(I already wrote to Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro... What China did was illegal. They should be held accountable.)

The AFP is also seeking reimbursement from China for the expenses incurred on the operation of Navy officer Jeffrey Facundo, who lost a finger in the incident.

“But we are also looking into the possibility of charging them with the cost of restructuring the hand of SN1 Facundo kasi ooperahan po sya para bumalik yung function ng kaniyang kamay,” Brawner added.

PH TO BLAME, CHINA CLAIMS

In their regular press conference on Thursday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning blamed the incident on the Philippines, adding that Manila “should face the consequences of its own action.”

“The Philippine vessels were carrying out an illegal 'resupply mission' which violated China’s territorial waters and staging a provocation when stopped by China Coast Guard, who acted lawfully and rightfully to defend China’s sovereignty. The Philippine side should face the consequences of its own action,” she said.

She also claimed that China’s actions in the Ayungin Shoal were “fully legitimate, justified and lawful”, referring to the guns seized by the Chinese Coast Guard from the Philippine Navy.

“I am not familiar with the specifics, but what I can tell you is that the Philippines illegally intruded the waters of Ren’ai Jiao in China’s Nansha Qundao and seriously violated China’s sovereignty. China Coast Guard responded with law enforcement measures that are fully legitimate, justified and lawful. We urge the Philippines to stop the infringement activities and provocations, and return to the right track of properly handling differences through dialogue and consultation,” she said.

Mao likewise denied that China is planning to attack the Philippines with hypersonic missiles.

“I’m not sure what the Philippine side’s source was, but I can tell you that China is committed to peaceful development and a national defense policy that is defensive in nature, and China does not pose a threat to any country. That said, we will certainly not sit by and watch when our legitimate rights and interests and regional peace and stability are being violated or under threat,” she said.

During the 1st semester AFP command conference in Camp Aguinaldo, the AFP presented several options to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for future RORE missions, but Brawner did not provide specific details.

The AFP chief said that they will not allow a repetition of the June 17 incident.

“Hindi tayo papaapi, hindi tayo papayag na gawin ulit sa atin yan, hindi puwde yun, Pilipino tayo," he added.

(We will not be cowered. They cannot do that to us again.)
