MANILA — Over 400,000 "deactivated" voters have sought the “reactivation” of their records to be able to vote in next year's midterm polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Wednesday.

Comelec data from February 12 to July 20, 2024 showed that “Total Applications for Reactivation” was at 409,329, with the breakdown as follows:

• Transfer with reactivation – 59,490

• Transfer for reactivation with correction – 21,746

As of July 28, the Comelec said it has "deactivated" around 5.1 million voters in the country due to their failure to vote in 2 elections.

The Comelec will continue to accept voters who intend to reactivate their records until September 30.

VOTER APPLICATION

The Comelec said some 4.8 Filipinos have processed their voter application.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said all processed applications still had to be subjected to a hearing and be ruled in favor of the applicants before they could be formally included or re-included in the official voter’s list.

New voter applications will be accepted until September 30, 2024.

COMELEC TAPS NAMRIA

The Comelec also inked a memorandum of agreement with the National Mapping Resource Authority (NAMRIA) to create a “map” that would help voters locate polling precincts.

“Meron kasi tayong tinatawag na precinct mapping... Inaalam kung saan ang lokasyon ng mga presinto, sadya bang yang mga presintong yan ay malapit sa mga botante? Baka naman yang mga presintong yan ay napakalayo ng nilalakad ng mga botante,” Garcia said.

NAMRIA’s technology can help the Comelec ensure that no voter will be disenfranchised, said Garcia.

“Isipin nyo kung magagamit natin, mahihiram natin, mase-share nila sa atin ang teknolohiyang iyan at kaalaman, yung conflict areas, yung possible conflict areas, yung areas where we are delivering our paraphernalia, even the machines and etcetera, kaya nating makita using their technology, using their resources,” Garcia said.
