MANILA — The Presidential Security Command is committed to securing Vice President Sara Duterte, its commander said Tuesday as she and her political allies raised safety concerns with the recall by the Philippine National Police of 75 of the police officers in her security detail.

The 75 cops — of 106 assigned to Vice President Duterte — were recalled to address a shortage of personnel in the National Capital Region, according to PNP chief Rommel Francisco Marbil.

"The PSC remains a professional and mission-oriented [Armed Forces of the Philippines] unit committed to accomplishing its new task of securing the Vice President," Maj. Gen. Nelson Morales, PSC chief, said.

"We will accomplish that mission," he also said.

The Presidential Security Group, which is tasked with securing the President and Vice President, their families, and high-profile visitors, has been reorganized into a full command.

"The [Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group] is now a sub-unit of the PSC," Morales said.

The VPSPG was formed in 2022 as a dedicated unit focused on securing the Vice President and her family. It had 433 personnel that year, according to a Commission on Audit report.

Duterte this week released an "open letter" to Marbil, saying the recall of the 75 police officers was part of "political harassment" against her, adding the cops who had been transferred out were PNP personnel she trusted.

She has also raised concerns about her family's safety, saying police had "cased" her house and had tried to find out where she lives.

The change in Duterte's security arrangements has also prompted Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, a former PNP chief, to call on retired police and military personnel to volunteer to provide her additional security.

The transfer of personnel, which Marbil said has nothing to do with politics, has become controversial because of the widening rift between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Duterte, who resigned from the Cabinet last month.
