MANILA – The death toll from the monsoon rains intensified by typhoon Carina has climbed to 34, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday.

The figure is based on initial data from police field units as of 10 a.m., PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said.

Fajardo said the death toll was still subject for validation by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, which releases the official number of fatalities.

Monsoon rains exacerbated by the typhoon triggered floods in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon this week.

Metro Manila has declared a state of calamity to unlock additional funds for disaster response.

Some areas have also postponed the opening of classes originally set on July 29, Monday.
