MANILA - Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 remained hoisted over Batanes as Typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) intensified further while moving north, state weather bureau PAGASA said Tuesday afternoon. 

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said the center of Carina was last located 325 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes as of 4 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts of up to 185 kph.

It is currently moving northward at 20 kph, and is expected to remain far from the Philippine landmass.

TCWS No. 2 has been raised in Batanes, with PAGASA saying winds of between 62 kph and 88 kph may be expected in at least 24 hours.

Areas under TCWS #1, which will experience wind speeds of up to 61 kph, are:

  • •Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
  • •Eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon, Dinapigue, Tumauini, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Cabagan, San Pablo, Santa Maria)
  • •Northern portion of Apayao  (Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Santa Marcela, Kabugao)
  • •Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Adams, Dumalneg, Burgos, Vintar, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Carasi)

PAGASA warned Carina is exhibiting strong to typhoon-force winds extending outwards up to 540 km from the center.

The southwest monsoon enhanced by Carina will also bring strong to gale-force gusts in 16 areas including Metro Manila especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.

The southwest monsoon or habagat enhanced by Carina is also bringing moderate to intense rainfall over various areas in western Luzon until Thursday, PAGASA added.

The typhoon is forecast to steadily intensify and may reach its peak intensity before making landfall over the northern portion of Taiwan between Wednesday evening and Thursday (25 July) morning, before exiting the Philippine area of responsibility.

Outside the PAR, Carina will cross the Taiwan Strait and make landfall over southeastern China on Thursday afternoon or evening.
