MANILA – A woman selling a six-day-old baby for P25,000 was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation in an entrapment operation in Muntinlupa City this week.

In a statement, the Department of Justice said the operation was carried out by the NBI- Human Trafficking Division in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, DOJ’s Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking and the Cyber-TIP Monitoring Center last Tuesday.

The operation stemmed from information received by the NBI-HTRAD from the Cyber-TIP Monitoring Center that babies were sold through a Facebook page.

The DOJ said an NBI agent went undercover and posed as a buyer and talked with the perpetrator who introduced herself as a midwife.

At the agreed meeting place and upon confirmation that the perpetrator was selling the baby, the agent signaled for the arrest.

The baby was then rescued and immediately turned over to the DSWD.

The justice department said the perpetrator underwent inquest proceedings at the DOJ on July 17 for violation of trafficking and cybercrime laws.

“The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts of the government to combat human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable members of the society,” the DOJ said in the statement.
