MANILA — The Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA) gathered for the State of Humane Rights Address (SOHRA) on Tuesday, July 16, in anticipation of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) next week.

The event highlighted critical issues affecting vulnerable communities and provided a contrasting perspective on the government’s narrative.

Under the theme “Unahin ang Karapatan, Katarungan, at Kagalingan ng Mamamayan! Hindi Cha-Cha! Hindi Gera! Hindi Trapo at Dinastiya!”, PAHRA stressed the importance of prioritizing human rights, justice, and public welfare over constitutional changes, conflict, and political dynasties.

Representatives from various groups and non-governmental organizations including Alyansa ng Manggagawa Agrikultura (AMA), Kongreso ng Pagkakaisa ng Maralitang Lungsod, Alyansa ng Maralitang Pilipino (AMP), Partido Manggagawa, and the Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA) gathered to discuss pressing agricultural concerns, issues on adequate housing for the homeless and underprivileged, labor rights, overseas Filipino workers’ welfare, and other socio-economic challenges.

Dymia Simbulan, chairperson and executive director of the Philippine Human Rights Information Center (PhilRights), criticized the administration’s “Bagong Pilipinas” slogan, stating, “There is nothing new in the Philippines right now."

She continued: "Walang bago sa bagong Pilipinas dahil nakita natin na marami doon sa mga dating problema, krisis, issue, at hamon na kinakaharap ng mamamayang Pilipino ay nananatili.”

(There is nothing new in 'Bagong Pilipinas' because we are seeing many of the same problems, crises and challenges that Filipinos are facing.)

She highlighted persistent issues including widespread poverty, inadequate livelihoods, low wages, housing shortages, education and health problems, and food scarcity.

Simbulan also mentioned PAHRA members, allies, and supporters calling for a unified action to advance human rights during President Marcos Jr.’s third SONA on July 22. She emphasized the importance of collective efforts in advocating for the rights of Filipino citizens amidst ongoing societal challenges.
