MANILA — Despite disputing claims, Filipino and Vietnamese navies recently held a series of exchanges at Pugad Island (Southwest Cay) in the Spratlys, the Philippine Navy said Monday.

Hosted by the Vietnam People’s Navy, the two navies on July 10 conducted staff-to-staff talk on regional maritime security updates, results of the cooperation in the rescue of a distressed Filipino fisherman, and proposals for future cooperation.

The contingents also participated in football, tug-of-war, and sack race games, and presented each other’s culture and cuisine.

In a statement, the Philippine Navy, through Naval Forces West, expressed its gratitude to the Vietnam People’s Navy for their warm accommodation and hospitality.

“The regular conduct of this Personnel Interaction provides an avenue to foster and sustain the good relationship between the two navies, building lasting friendship and cooperative efforts in mutual maritime concerns. This one-day event took place in the spirit of peace designed to foster friendship, greater understanding and camaraderie between the two navies,” the Philippine Navy said in a statement.

Previously controlled by the Philippines, Pugad Island has been under Vietnamese control since 1975.

The 12-hectare island has now a small Vietnamese civilian population.

The Philippine Navy said it is looking forward to continuing meaningful exchanges with Vietnam in the future.
