MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday said it would roll out African swine fever (ASF) vaccines by September but would limit them to government use for 6 months.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the ASF vaccine from Vietnam, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel told state television PTV.

"DA has to bid it out kasi yung bureaucracy 'yung kalaban ko dito. Sana by September ma-roll out na at ma-vaccinate yung mga growers ng ating mga backyard,” he said.

"But for government use pa lang ito kasi basically mino-monitor for 6 months ng government use then after that hopefully kung pumasa na lahat at okay na lahat for commercial use na," he said.

The DA chief earlier expressed confidence about the efficacy of the ASF vaccines.

"The vaccine from Vietnam really works. So, that solves our problem," he said earlier this month.

In March, the DA said that the hog mortality rate in the Philippines due to the ASF was almost 100 percent.

The agency said that this affected the pork supply in the Philippines as animals infected with the disease are culled even if they recover.

The Philippines is one of the 19 Asian countries affected by the ASF since 2019, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
