MANILA (UPDATE) — A Senate panel on Wednesday cited in contempt suspended Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo after she failed to show up in their investigation due to medical reasons.

"The chair rules to cite in contempt Alice Guo, or Guo Hua Ping, and for [the issuance of a] warrant of arrest [against her]," Sen. Risa Hontiveros said, approving the motion of Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada.

The senators found unacceptable Guo's excuse of deteriorating mental health as the reason for her absence.

Hontiveros noted Guo's letter asking that she be excused from the hearing had no attached medical certificate from a licensed physician.

In her letter, Guo said medical doctors had refused to give her a medical certificate because they would be subjected to the same ridicule she endured.

Aside from Mayor Guo, 7 other individuals were also cited in contempt. These include some of Guo's alleged relatives and those linked to the illegal POGO in Porac, Pampanga.

Hontiveros explained that the contempt ruling would set in motion their application of arrest warrants against the 8 individuals.

"Pagkatapos ng hearing, susulatan ng chair ang Senate President. Once he [approved] yung citing in contempt ng chair, in effect mase-set into motion na yung pag-issue ng arrest warrant," Hontiveros said.

Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero earlier said he would approve an arrest warrant against Guo if Hontiveros' panel asked for it.

Guo has come under fire for allegedly failing to answer questions about her background amid rumors that she is a Chinese national.

A National Bureau of Investigation probe earlier revealed Guo's fingerprints matched those of a Chinese national, Guo Hua Ping, based on a dactyloscopy exam.

Guo had insisted that she is a Filipino citizen.
