Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) will soon be able to renew their drivers license online and without having to go back in the Philippines to personally renew it.

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Sec. Hans Leo Cacdac said Sunday the initiative was to "cut the red tape" in the process of renewal.

"Ang kahilingan usually ng Filipino community ay 'yung magkaroon ng mobile license renewal services 'yung LTO (Land Transportation Office) sa ibang bansa. Obviously that will entail mobilization of resources and personnel so ngayon... online, digitalized o automated ang license renewal process," Cacdac said in an interview in TeleRadyo Serbisyo's Story Outlook.

The official, however, clarified that this was only an announcement that the initiative is in the works and is not yet implemented.

"'Yung mga detalye, isasagawa pa nila LTO Asec. Vigor Mendoza at magkaroroon pa ng pangalawang issuance [ng memorandum]... Pasimula pa lang 'yan. Mayroon pang follow through," said Cacdac.

When asked if the DMW and LTO has a target date on when it will implement the service, Cacdac said that they are targeting to roll it out in 1 or 2 months.

Furthermore, the Cacdac added that if the service would be a success during its implementation to OFWs, it may also be implemented locally, but clarified that Mendoza said it will be "in due time" and that they are focusing more on the OFWs side.

The initiative was initially announced last Friday (June 7), which coincided with the Migrant Workers' Day.
