MANILA — Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said there may be more foreign nationals pretending to be Filipinos after the National Bureau of Investigation said suspended Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo and Chinese national Guo Hua Ping are the same person based on fingerprints.

He said the Senate is looking into reports of foreigners buying up land and possibly misusing the process for the late registration of births.

He said that Guo came under scrutiny because of her political office and the raid on the POGO compound in her town, but that there may be others who are buying up and developing land despite a ban on foreign ownership.

Gatchalian added that they are currently investigating reports that there are foreigners buying land to start their own businesses, and using late registration of birth certificates, similar to what Guo allegedly did.

A certain Guo Hua Ping came to the Philippines as a teen while using a Chinese passport, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has recommended the cancellation of Guo’s birth certificate. — AC Coloma, ABS-CBN News
