MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday said she believes her friendship with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. remains following her exit from his Cabinet as Education Secretary.

“Sa tingin ko magkaibigan pa rin kami ni (I would think that we are still friends with) President Bongbong Marcos," Duterte told Cagayan de Oro reporters.

Duterte was in the city as the Office of the Vice President (OVP) hosted the annual OVP Pride Reception.

Duterte quit as DepEd chief last week, with little to no explanation, aside from saying it was driven by her "true concern" for the teachers and students.

Her resignation from the Marcos cabinet was preceded by months of tension between the 2 powerful political clans—and less then a year before the crucial 2025 midterm vote.

Marcos will have almost a month to choose a replacement to Duterte, whose resignation will take effect on July 19, 2024.

Duterte said she is eager to know who Marcos will pick to succeed her in the Department of Education.

"Ang prayoridad natin ngayon ay malaman kung sino bagong secretary ng Department of Education (DepEd),” she said.

On Monday, the Teachers' Dignity Coalition urged Marcos to choose a "non-political" figure to head the Education department. —With report from Merlyn Manos
