MANILA — Politicians in the opposition need to present alternatives and take definite positions on issues, former Sen. Leila De Lima said Wednesday.

De Lima, acquitted this week on the last of the drug cases against her and that she has maintained were politically motivated, said being out of the administration's favor is not enough.

“Dapat tingnan ng maigi ng taumbayan kung ano ang sinasabi nila na oposisyon sila (The people have to examine what politicians mean when they say they are the opposition),” she said on Teleradyo Serbisyo of former Duterte spokesperson Harry Roque’s claim that Vice President Sara Duterte is the new “leader of the opposition.”

Vice President Duterte has not made that claim herself.

“Kailangan meron kang pinapakita na pinaninindigan na alternative platform,” she said.

(You have to have an alternative platform to present)

“Malinaw din ‘yung mga posisyon mo sa mga napakahalagang issues ngayon tulad ng West Philippine Sea, International Criminal Court, pagpapanagot sa mga high-profile fugitives from justice na nagtatago.”

(You must also have clear positions on important issues like the West Philippine Sea, International Criminal Court and holding high-profile fugitives to account.)

De Lima, spokesperson of the minority Liberal Party, said LP is still working on its slate of candidates for the 2025 elections.

TRILLANES: DUTERTES TRYING TO 'LEAD THE NARRATIVE'

In a separate interview on Teleradyo Serbisyo, former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV said that Vice President Sara Duterte's claim that three Dutertes — former president Rodrigo, Davao City congressman Paolo and Davao City mayor Sebastian — will be running for the Senate next year may just be an attempt to "lead the narrative" in the run-up to the polls.

"Pinapaaga nila yung umpisa ng election season… Puwede nilang sabihin na politically motivated ang issues laban sa kanila," he said.

He added the announcement could be a trial balloon to see if the public is receptive to the idea and to have more people talking about them.

"Kung mapa-angat nila sa survey nila na pasok silang tatlo sa Top 12, bakit sila hindi tatakbo?"

(If their standings in the surveys improve enough to get the three into the Top 12, why wouldn't they run?)
