MANILA – Authorities on Friday arrested the information technology (IT) officer of a media outlet who allegedly hacked the websites of the military, National Security Council, and several banks.

The suspect claimed he hacked some of the websites under the instruction of Manila Bulletin IT Editor Art Samaniego so that he can allegedly use it as content for his column and social media platforms.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said it was preparing to file a case against Samaniego.

Samaniego, who is also the Senior Technology Officer of Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp., denied all the allegations. He added that he has been a long-time partner of government agencies in cybersecurity.

The suspect said Samaniego started giving him instructions on which websites to hack in 2019, after he was hired by the Manila Bulletin. He said the hacked websites became the subject of Samaniego’s column and social media posts.

The Manila Bulletin has not yet responded to requests for a statement regarding the arrest of its officer and his claims.

In the NBI’s press conference, the suspect said one of the last instructions he received from Samaniego was to hack the online application of political coalition 1Sambayan.

The NBI said it was collating digital evidence in the case and would eventually subpoena Samaniego.

NBI Cybercrime Division Chief Atty. Jeremy Lotoc said they would give Samaniego an opportunity to answer all the allegations.
