The Commission on Elections rejected Tuesday a proposal to extend the voters registration period past September 30, 2024 amid complaints that the hot weather may discourage some registrants from going to their local Comelec office.

Comelec spokesman Atty. John Rex Laudiangco said the poll body is eyeing the printing of final ballots for the 2025 elections by December of this year.

"Imposible ang extension sa panahong ito dahil pagkatapos ng Sept. 30 registration, idadaan pa po namin ang lahat ng application sa election registration board hearing by October 15," he said in a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.

He added that after the election registration board hearing, the registrants are assigned to their respective precincts and then undergo automated fingerprint identification system to ensure there are no double registrants or flying voters.

"Wala nang extension dahil binabalak na ng Comelec na i-imprenta ang pinal na bilang ng balota by December," he said.

The Comelec is currently conducting satellite registration and register anywhere programs in different regions to encourage new voters to register.
