MANILA – The five Filipinos injured in a Singapore Airlines flight that hit severe turbulence remain in Bangkok hospitals as they recover from fractures and wounds, a Philippine Embassy official said Wednesday.

Millicent Cruz Paredes, Philippine Ambassador to Thailand and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, said the Filipinos were “out of danger,” but they remained under medical observation.

Those injured include a couple and their 2-year-old child, she said.

“I was able to see them and the good news is that they’re out of danger but they continue to go through medical tests. And ang mga injury nila, may fracture, may wound, but they are being taken care of,” Paredes told ABS-CBN News in a telephone interview.

A 73-year-old British man died of a suspected heart attack and over 80 were reportedly injured when the Boeing 777 descended 6,000 feet while cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet over the Andaman Sea approaching Myanmar. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board the plane.

The flight was diverted and landed in stormy weather in Bangkok.

The Filipinos were brought to two separate hospitals in Thailand and were “being closely monitored.”

“We’re just awaiting further results of the several tests that they have undergone and they continue to have more tests,” Paredes said.

Goh Choon Poong, Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Officer, said a relief flight with 143 of the SQ321 passengers and crew members who are able to travel, landed in Singapore on Wednesday morning.

Another 79 passengers and six crew members are still in Bangkok, including the injured who are receiving medical treatment as well as their families and loved ones who were on the flight.

“Singapore Airlines swiftly dispatched a team to Bangkok last night and they have been helping our colleagues with support on the ground,” he said.

“We are fully cooperating with the relevant authority on the investigations.”
