MANILA — Nearly 2 years since the start of the 19th Congress, the Senate on Monday carried out a major leadership overhaul, ousting Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri as Senate President, who was immediately replaced by Sen. Francis "Chiz" Escudero.

Upon Zubiri's resignation, his close allies in the Senate also decided to quit their committee chairmanships, some already with replacements while the others still left vacant.

Here are the newly-voted Senate leaders as of May 20, 2024:

• Senate President Francis Escudero

•  Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada

•  Senate Majority Leader/ Rules Committee chair Francis Tolentino

•  Senate Committee on Accounts chair Alan Peter Cayetano

Four Senate panels, formerly led by Senators Sonny Angara and Nancy Binay, remain vacant:

During Monday's plenary session, Angara announced that Sen. Grace Poe would replace him as Finance committee chair but it was not formally taken up on the floor.

Angara also resigned as chairman of the subcommittee on Resolution of Both Houses 6 or economic charter change. No replacement has been named.

Meanwhile, Sen, JV Ejercito also resigned as Deputy Majority Leader but there was no word on his replacement yet.

Here is the full set of Senate committee leadership as of May 20, 2024:

During his resignation speech, Zubiri also announced that he is now “an independent member of the Senate.”
