MANILA — Senate Minority Floor Leader Aquilino Pimentel III hasexpressed concern over the use of internet voting in the 2025 midterm elections.

During the hearing of the Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation joint with Finance on Monday, Pimentel said a law is needed in order to use the said mode.

“I have serious reservation,” Pimentel said. “We really need a law if we are to adopt internet voting…Mabuti (It’s good) we do things correctly. With legal basis.”

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia said under the current law, the poll body is allowed to venture into other modes of voting so long as it submits a report to the joint congressional oversight committee.

He pointed out that no one has gone to the Supreme Court to question their act.

They are, however, in favor of having a law.

“Gusto namin may law sana to at least institutionalize internet voting in our country,” Garcia said.

(We want a law to institutionalize internet voting in our country.)

In an interview after the hearing, Garcia said the Comelec en banc will talk about the matter in their next session.

The poll body is currently conducting a post qualification evaluation of the joint venture of SMS Global Technologies, Inc. and Sequent Tech Inc. for the internet voting contract.
