MANILA — Drivers and operators of public utility jeepneys (PUJs) flocked to different Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board offices on Tuesday to beat the April 30, 2024 consolidation deadline of PUV modernization program of the government.

LTFRB chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III said the government is confident it could reach a consolidatation rate of 79 to 80 percent of the entire PUJs nationwide.

”As of last night based on our count, tayo po ay nag-increased ng 8,250 pa so that would be about 158,000 po. So from its previous mark of 76% we are confident na mabi-breached po namin yung possible 79 to 80 percent of the entire public utility jeepney in the entire Philippines,” Guadiz told ABS-CBN News.

"Pinag-aralan naming maiige yung consolidation… Nakita namin talaga 'yung programa na okay naman. Eh kailangan sumunod sa gobyerno, hindi tayo puwedeng sumuway sa gobyerno eh," Yangco said.

According to LTFRB-NCR, the consolidation rate in Metro Manila alone as of April 29 was at 57.71 percent or 28,621 PUJ and UV express units out of the total 49,593.

LTFRB emphasized that there will be no more another extension after today’s consolidation deadline.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation said there are enough programs for affected drivers and operators who opted not to join the consolidation program.

"Dalawang government agencies ang tutulong sa mga apektado… Department of Labor, meron tayong entrepreneur, bibigyan sila ng puhunan. Sa TESDA naman meron tayong tsuper scholar. Sila ay tuturuan para magkaroon sila ng ibang way to earn a living. Ang DSWD ay kinakausap namin para pati DSWD ay puwedeng tumulong sa mga affected drivers," Usec. Andy Ortega told ABS-CBN News.

LTFRB assured affected stakeholders that they will be given due process and will let them explain why they did not join the consolidation before they decide to revoke their franchises.

"We will give them 5 days to answer. Whatever is their answer is, if there is no merit, then we will cancel their franchise come second week - dun na po talaga yung start ng hulihan," Guadiz said.

Fines and penalty await those jeepney operators who will still ply their routes once the LTFRB decided that all unconsolidated units are deemed colorum.

Guadiz said the driver’s license of a colorum unit will be suspended for 1 year, and there will be P50,00 penalty for the operator while the apprehended units will also be impounded.
