MANILA -- A defense analyst said China’s presence in the Philippine Rise may have something to do with an underwater survey to prepare for Beijing's possible invasion of Taiwan.

Professor Renato de Castro, an international studies professor at the De La Salle University, said China conducting a survey in the area is no longer new.

“I have to emphasize, this is not new. They have been conducting surveys for reconnaissance operations there since, we only became aware of it in 2017, when their survey ship made an unexpected port call at the Surigao Port, one of the ports in Mindanao, when one of their crew members had appendicitis,” De Castro told ABS-CBN News on Monday.

De Castro noted that China may have been investigating the area, not just for its resources, but also to map the underwater terrain for its submarines.

“Number one is they might be looking for resources. The other one is they’re mapping the underwater terrain or seabed for possible naval operations, especially submarine operations,” De Castro said.

He added, “Probably, it’s linked with Taiwan or it has something to do with our decision to put EDCA sites in that area, which is still linked with Taiwan. They’re probably surveying the area for possible operations directed against us or against Taiwan.”

China has been claiming Taiwan as its own territory.

The Philippines has directed the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard to send ships to patrol the Philippine Rise following the presence of two Chinese research vessels in the area over the weekend.

The Philippine Rise is a 24-million-hectare area rich in marine resources and is well within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
