Election officials in the San Mateo county of San Francisco Bay Area are pushing forth their "More Ways and More Days to Vote" campaign.

The initiative looks to meet the language needs of residents to help them access voter information, regardless of their proficiency in English.

"What we do is we provide all of our materials in Filipino," said Jim Irizarry, San Mateo's assistant chief elections officer,  "and all of our materials in Chinese, Spanish and in English and in other important languages."

With the March 5 primary just around the corner, officials are also making sure Filipino voters’ needs are being met.

Nearly 30 percent of San Mateo’s population identify Asian-Americans, with 5.7% or 40,000 of them Filipino. County authorities hope that with their outreach efforts, eligible Filipino voters would exercise their right to vote.

“We make an extra effort to make sure that we’re multilingual and that information is printed,” Irizarry added, “the sample ballot, voter information pamphlet is in Filipino but we also have materials that go out to the Filipino press.”

Voting in San Mateo had begun on Feb. 5, when all 434,000 registered voters received their official ballots by mail.

There are different ways that the county is making it easy and convenient for people to cast their ballots.

One way is to vote by mail while others prefer to personally cast their ballots on machines at the voting centers. San Mateo county voters can also cast their votes electronically.

"We have a new system called remote accessible vote by mail," said Irizarry, "you can call our office and say you would like to receive your ballot electronically."

The election official reminded voters that their ballots must be received at voting centers by 12 midnight on Election Day. Polls will open at 7 in the morning and will close at 8 in the evening.

Irizarry said those in line before 8 P.M. would still be able to vote.

San Mateo county invests millions of dollars in running an election, especially when it comes to their staff and their technology.

“Our people are the absolute best,” said Irizarry. “Our technology is absolutely cutting-edge and it needs to be to be able to actually manage not only an election, but also when we start talking about cybersecurity and protections that’s necessary to make sure that voter information is safe and secure.”
