MANILA - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will ban e-bikes, e-trikes, tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts and similar vehicles from traversing national roads, circumferential roads, and radial roads in Metro Manila starting April 15.
MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, in a press conference, reiterated that the prohibitions are not new, since the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) have previously issued similar ordinances, which were all incorporated in the MMDA regulation.
We will just enforce this prohibition because of the increasing number of accidents involving e-bikes, e-trikes, and e-scooters. We will not wait for these figures to go higher and the situation to worsen,” he said.
According to the MMDA Road Safety Unit, a total of 907 e-bike, e-trike and e-scooter related road crash in Metro Manila for the last year. In 2019, only 309 accidents were recorded.

Artes said the implementing rules and regulations for the policy is expected to be released a week or two before April 15.
He also explained that the regulation is for the safety of those who use electric light vehicles.
Moving forward, Artes said they are looking at the possibility of including safety of operating e-vehicles in the MMDA’s Motorcycle Riding Academy curriculum.
