MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday left the country for the fifth time this year to travel to Germany and Czechia, a trip he describes as a “pivotal moment in our efforts to deepen bilateral relations.”

German and Czech leaders had invited Marcos to travel to their respective countries after they visited Manila in April 2023 and January 2024, respectively.

“During our time in Germany and the Czech Republic, I will underscore our unwavering commitment to strengthening partnerships with like-minded countries, promoting the rules-based international order which serves as the cornerstone of global peace and stability,” Marcos said in his pre-departure statement at the Villamor Airbase.

Marcos' trip to Europe’s largest economy comes on the heels of his back-to-back trips in Australia, where he urged international leaders to rally behind the Philippines in pushing back against China’s expansionist agenda in the South China Sea.

At least 2 agreements will be signed between Manila and Berlin, including a “joint declaration of intent on strengthening maritime cooperation” and a deal to forge closer cooperation between the two countries’ vocational education agencies.

In Prague, Marcos and his Czech counterparts will witness the signing of agreements that will “elevate cooperation for the Safe and orderly migration of Filipino workers and provide a higher level of protection for Filipinos.”

“We will also focus on expanding economic cooperation, opening up more avenues for mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities,” Marcos said, noting that he will be meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Czech Republic’s 4 Constitutional heads of government.

“It is important that as we enhance our labor cooperation with these countries, our highest priority remains the protection of the rights and the welfare of our overseas Filipino workers,” he said.

The Philippines seeks to “tap Germany’s expertise in renewable energy to assist us in our energy transition efforts,” Marcos Jr. said.

The Czech Republic, on the other hand, has expertise in the fields of agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and scientific instruments, among others.

“We are eager to invite Germany and the Czech Republic to consider the Philippines as a production hub for their products,” he said.

“I will be meeting confident that this visit will yield a fruitful outcome,” he added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs earlier defended the frequency of the president’s overseas trips, saying that these are investments for both diplomacy and trade.
