The Tourism Congress of the Philippines on Thursday urged airport authorities to immediately fumigate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport following reports of bed bug infestations in Terminals 2 and 3.

Photos and videos posted on social media pages showed passengers complaining of being bitten by bed bugs while sitting on chairs provided by the airport.

"Nakakahiya pero isolated case lang siya. Sana hindi siya maging medyo malaking issue," James Montenegro, president of the Tourism Congress of the Philippines, said in a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.

He added: "I saw they removed the chair already. I hope they fumigate the airport so that they can stop the spread of these bed bugs. This is an isolated incident; it shouldn’t have a major impact on our industry. It’s not the first time that an establishment [had] bed bugs in our country."

The Manila International Airport Authority has apologized to the victims and said a speedy resolution to the infestation should be expected.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed solely on the blood of people and animals while they sleep.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown in color, wingless, range from 1mm to 7mm and can live several months without a blood meal.

Bed bug infestations usually occur around or near the areas where people sleep including apartments, shelters, rooming houses, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains, and dorm rooms.
