MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday urged El Niño-hit towns in Mindoro to declare a state of calamity, which would trigger the release of funds to mitigate the effects of drought.

The DA released the statement after Bulalacao town in Oriental Mindoro declared a state of calamity due to the severity of agricultural damage there caused by El Niño.

"Due to the worsening situation, Sec. Tiu Laurel appealed to local government units across Mindoro to officially declare a state of calamity if warranted," the agency said in a release.

"Such a declaration would enable DA to extend comprehensive assistance to affected communities, including financial aid, agricultural inputs like crop seeds, and livestock."

According to the Municipal Agriculture Office, damage to onion and rice crops in Bulalacao has reached P65 million and P27 million, respectively.

Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor said that around 1,000 farmers have been affected.

Thousands of hectares of rice and onion crops have withered in the towns of Bulalacao and Mansalay in Oriental Mindoro. With a month of no rainfall, the rivers that supply water to the farmlands have also dried up.

Misery hit farmer JoeBert Herbacio as his months of hard work cultivating rice crops were wasted.

"Ito lang inaasahan naming palay at sibuyas. 'Yun po problema kung papaano mababawi ginastos namin," he said.

The governor assured that assistance will be provided to the affected farmers even as the province is still recovering from last year's oil spill disaster.

The DA also deployed a team to deliver aid to the island's farmers and fisherfolk.

Governor Dolor added that if three more municipalities declare a state of calamity, the entire province of Oriental Mindoro will also be placed under the same declaration.
