As the Philippines continues to earn the reputation of a retirement and investment destination, its officials are making a push for non-Filipino citizens, and those who are not dual citizens, to avail of a special retirees visa.

"The country is booming and there are real positive developments and opportunities,” said Maria Alnee Gamble, the acting head of post at the Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles.

The official said many FilAms are considering retirement in the Philippines.

“Perhaps you also know of many other Americans, especially non-Filipinos, who are considering this as well. In making this a consideration, you may also be thinking of the possible downsides in the Philippines.

The Philippine Retirement Authority recently met with the Filipino American community in Los Angeles to promote the Special Resident Retirees Visa.

The program has been around for nearly 40,000 and some 80,000 people have already availed of the visa in the past.

China has had the most number of enrollees since the program began, with the U.S. at fourth place.

The Philippine government is bent on ensuring that many people know about it and its long-term benefits.

"There’s an option of permanency with this visa,” said Mervin Magbuhat of the Philippine Retirement Authority. “It lets you stay there for as long as you want. We don’t require a certain period of time to be there. It’s a multiple-entry and indefinite-stay program.”

He added: “You can come in and out as you please. It exempts you from the ACR card. It’s called a retirement visa, but it’s a well-rounded program that allows you to work, venture into gainful employment, and invest.”

Eligible applicants have to be at least 50 years old and must complete medical examinations, submit police and NBI clearance, along with a payment of fees.

Those interested can contact their local Philippine consulate for more information.
