VIENTIANE, Lao PDR (UPDATE) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. attended an “urgent call” over the situation of Filipinos in the Middle East during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit on Wednesday.

Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro represented the Philippines during the first half-hour of the ASEAN Leaders’ Retreat session as the President was out on a video conference with some of his Cabinet members.

“With the growing tensions in the middle east, we have to secure our Filipinos who are in the region so we wanted to make security arrangements,” said Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, who attended the video conference with the President.

“It was just an urgent call to assess the situation there,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Summit.

“The President is at the Retreat now so he did not miss out on anything,” he said. “He just had to attend also to an important call to secure our Filipinos in the region.”

About 40,000 Filipinos are stuck in Lebanon, where tensions have intensified as Israeli troops and militant group Hezbollah exchanged gunfire and bombings near the border of the two countries.

Marcos Jr. attended other parts of the ASEAN Summit, including the opening ceremonies and the plenary session. The President is expected to participate in the succeeding sessions of the regional bloc’s annual meeting.
