Former U.S. president Barack Obama was welcomed by a blue wave of supporters in the swing state of Nevada on Oct. 19.

Filipino-American leaders were among those who took part in a weekend of action for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her vice presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

As Nevada kicked off early voting on Oct. 19, Obama encouraged those in attendance to vote.

"It's going to be tight because a lot of Americans are still struggling," he said. "As a country, we've been through a lot over these last few years. We had a historic pandemic that wreaked havoc on communities, on businesses."

According to the Office of Nevada Secretary of State, nearly 42,000 statewide voters turned out to vote on the first day of early voting in the Silver State.

In his speech, the former president questioned Trump’s behavior and competence in governing for four years due to his advanced age.

"We do not need to see what an older, loonier Donald Trump looks like with no guardrails," said Obama.

Members of the group Filipino Americans for Harris Walz - like San Francisco-based Donny De Leon - were so excited to meet Obama.

De Leon said their mission is to engage and motivate about 200,000 Filipinos living in Nevada to vote. Filipinos make up the largest Asian American Pacific Islander community in the Las Vegas area.

Melissa Ramoso, national co-chair of Fil-Ams for Harris Walz, said it was an honor to help mobilize over a hundred Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders from California to go to Nevada.

"Every presidential cycle, we know Nevada plays a critical role in determining the presidency," she said.

Nevada is the smallest swing state, with just six electoral votes.

A recent survey from AARP showed Harris and Trump in a tight race in Nevada, with Trump leading Harris by one point — 47 percent to 46 percent, among likely voters.
