MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he has asked interior and local secretary Eduardo Año to "handle" and "fix" the Philippine National Police, which is under his agency's jurisdiction.
"Dito okay lang, basta sa probinsiya mahusay ang mga pulis, but in Manila... That’s why I did not appoint a PNP (chief)," Duterte said in a speech before earthquake evacuees in M'lang town, Cotabato.
"Sabi ko kay General Año, hawakan niya muna. You fix the police so by the time we make the exit 2 years from now at least ang mga problema ng mga Pilipino medyo hindi na masyadong mabigat."
The President had appointed Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa as officer-in-charge of the PNP after Oscar Albayalde stepped down in October, following allegations he protected his men who were accused of selling seized illegal drugs.
Duterte said he was taking time in choosing the next PNP chief.
