MANILA - At least 20 villages in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro got flooded as the Bucayao-Panggalaan River overflowed, local disaster officials said Sunday.

Even the city's nearby towns, such as Baco, Naujan, San Teodoro, Bansud and Socorro, were affected by heavy rains and strong winds, said Choy Aboboto, head of Calapan City's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Baco has been placed under a state of calamity. Baco Mayor Reynaldo Marco said almost the entire town is flooded, and around 2,000 families had to be evacuated.

Some roads in Calapan City have become impassable to vehicles due to floods. Rescuers were going around villages there to check on the affected communities.
