Stalls in the old Digos City market were burned to the ground on Christmas eve

DAVAO DEL SUR -- More than 100 vendors of the old market in Digos City spent a gloomy Christmas after a fire razed their stalls and goods on Christmas Eve.

Among the victims are members of the Alerta family who sell garlic and onions. They lost goods worth around P800,000.

"Daghan gyud ang damage, lugi gyud, pero pasalamat ko kay kumpleto gihapon mi," Janet Alerta said.

(A lot has been damaged, we really lost a lot of money, but we are still thankful that our family is still complete)

William Alerta believes that the fire was intentionally done.

"Dugay nami nakadungog ana nga hearsay pero wala lang gibalewala lang namo, kay naa silay project naa silay tukuron diha," he said.

(We have heard about that many times but we disregarded it because we thought its just hearsay. There's a planned project here.)

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the cause of the fire is still unknown.

According to BFP investigator SF01 Artemio Rivera, initial estimate of the total damages has reached more than P10 million.
