Former president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III was discharged from hospital Tuesday after undergoing an undisclosed "routine procedure."

"Happy to report that former President Noynoy Aquino has been discharged from the hospital today. He thanks everyone who sent prayers and well-wishes," said Abigail Valte, Aquino's former spokesperson.

Valte earlier belied reports that Aquino, who stayed at the Makati Medical Center, underwent a heart procedure.

She clarified that the former president underwent a "scheduled check-up and a routine procedure."

During his time as president, Aquino was known to have been a chain smoker and dealt with rumors about the state of his health.

In August, the former president missed rites commemorating his father's death anniversary because he was sick, his sister Kris Aquino said without providing additional details. -- With a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
