MANILA - A cyclone slowly advancing towards the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) has intensified into a tropical storm, state weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday.

Speaking to radio DZMM, meteorologist Jun Galang said the storm with international name "Meari" was already packing top sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of 80 kph at 10 a.m.

Meari, last spotted 1,385 kilometers east of Luzon, was expected to enter PAR on Thursday afternoon, after which it will be given the local name "Marce."

The storm, however, has stayed almost stationary as its movements were hampered by a weaker tropical depression to its right, Galang said.

The second storm, he added, was plotted 2,270 kilometers east of Luzon and is unlikely to enter PAR.
Galang said PAGASA is also monitoring a low pressure area (LPA) located 325 kilometers east of Sorsogon City.

Unlike the two cyclones which have no direct effect on the country so far, the LPA is currently bringing rains over Mimaropa, eastern Visayas, Bicol region, and Quezon province.
