MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - A hotel in Kidapawan City nearly collapsed Thursday morning after a 6.5-magnitude quake jolted Cotabato less than a week after a powerful tremor rocked parts of Mindanao.

No one was inside the building when it gave way, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

Some patients from a clinic behind the building, however, were trapped but have since been evacuated to safe areas, it added.

"Takbo nang takbo yung ating mga ambulance dahil apparently meron talagang mga malubhang nainjured," local disaster official Psalmer Bernalte told radio DZMM.

The building's structure has yet to be reevaluated following the magnitude 6.3 quake last Tuesday, Bernalte said.

"Ang ginawa ng city government kasi it's a business establishment, 'yung may portions lang na nasira 'yun lang ang ni-restrict ng aming command post," he said.

The Thursday quake was the third temblor that hit southern Philippines this month.

The Philippines suffers regular tremors as part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
