MANILA - Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio rubbed elbows with world leaders Tuesday night at a banquet for Japan's new emperor as she represented her father President Rodrigo Duterte who had to cut short his trip due to "unbearable" back pain.

Dressed in a brightly colored terno, Duterte-Carpio used the banquet for newly-enthroned Japanese Emperor Naruhito "as an opportune time to network and mingle" with over 180 state leaders and envoys, Malacañang said.

"According to Mayor Duterte, she was able to leave the event at 11:00 p.m. as she spent time to chat with other world leaders, assessing the event as an opportune time to network and mingle with them," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said on Wednesday.

The Palace also hailed Duterte-Carpio for "properly and elegantly" representing the Philippines at the banquet, where she got the chance to speak with Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako.

"The Office of the President wishes to relay its gratitude to Mayor Duterte for stepping up and properly and elegantly representing the country in the President's stead as the latter was constrained to leave Tokyo for Manila earlier that evening," Panelo said.

Nursing an aching spine, President Duterte flew back to Manila on Tuesday night, shortly after attending the enthronement ceremonies in Japan.

He is due to see a neurologist on Wednesday and will update the public on his health condition, Panelo said.

The President's daughter also got the chance to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who will also host a banquet Wednesday night.

Duterte-Carpio will also represent the President at the upcoming dinner party.
