MANILA - The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Wednesday assured the public that although the power lines are "vulnerable" to typhoons, they have prepared for its quick restoration after the typhoon wreaks havoc.

NGCP Spokesperson Atty. Cynthia Perez-Alabanza told ANC Alerts they have already coordinated with their regional offices in preparing for Typhoon Lawin.

"We already coordinated with our regional offices to ensure that the spare poles, the restoration system and the equipment need to create bypass are in place so that they may be dispatched immediately to the areas that are most affected by the storm," she said.

"We also conducted early on—even before the typhoon season began, as early as March—black-out tabletop drills to assure ourselves and the public that NGCP, its personnel is prepared for any contingency should super typhoons in the nature of Lawin hit the Philippines," she added.

Alabanza clarified, if a grid facility is destroyed, it will be reported to the Energy Regulatory Commission, requesting a recovery fee to be passed to the consumers.

However, she said this will take a year since they are given that much to submit a report on the force majeure.

"At this time, we’re really just focusing on ensuring that there is as little damage to the grid as possible and whatever damage it does sustain as consequence of Lawin, will be restored immediately," she said.

Alabanza said they haven't monitored any line having been affected by super typhoon 'Lawin,' but the restoration for those left by Typhoon 'Karen' is ongoing. Maintenance activities in those areas have been put on hold temporarily for the safety of the linemen.
