MANILA—Tropical depression Perla intensified into tropical storm Friday, the state weather agency said, as it threatened to bring scattered rains over northern Luzon.

The tropical storm, with international name Neoguri, was last spotted 790 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, PAGASA said.

Perla currently packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gusts of up to 80 kph.

The storm may bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Batanes, Cagayan, including the Babuyan Group of Islands, and Apayao over the weekend, weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin said.
