MANILA - Two inmates in the Manila City Jail were killed on Sunday while several others were injured when a riot broke out inside the facility, jail officials confirmed.
The fatalities were identified as Alvin Royo and Lito Escala. Both died after being mauled.
The fight broke out when members of rival gangs Batang City Jail and Sputnik Gang had an argument over a bed, said Jail Senior Inspector Jayrex Bustinera, spokesperson of the Manila City Jail.
Bustinera said the riot was an isolated incident, but jail officials have declared a red alert over the facility. The inmates who figured in the riot were segregated to different dormitories, and all cells were locked until further notice.
The Manila Police District is conducting an investigation into the riot collaboration with jail officials.
