MANILA - Amid a new case of hazing, the parents of slain law freshman Horacio “Atio” Castillo III on Sunday called on lawmakers to define hazing as a heinous crime.

Castillo, 22, was declared dead upon arrival at the Chinese General Hospital on Sept. 17, 2017 after allegedly going through fatal hazing rites in the hands of Aegis Jvris fraternity members of the University of Santo Tomas.

"I’m asking our mambabatas natin maybe include hazing as a heinous crime already. Patuloy na dini-disregard siya eh, maybe kailangan nang gawing heinous siya. Maybe it will deter," Horacio's mother Carmina Castillo told radio DZMM.

His father Horacio Castillo Jr. also said heinous crime convicts should definitely be excluded from being granted early release through good conduct.

Government has issued new implementing rules and regulations for the good conduct time allowance law that prohibited escapees, habitual delinquents, recidivists, and heinous crime convicts from benefitting from the policy.

"Kawawang-kawawa po 'yung family. Ang laki ng hirap para mabigyan ng hustisya 'yung victims, later to find out na ito pala ay pwede mapaiksi," he said.

Ten members of the fraternity have been indicted for violating the anti-hazing law, and are now detained at the Manila City Jail.

Another Aegis Jvris member, John Paul Solano, was also indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice.

Castillo's parents, meantime, expressed their sympathies to the family of Darwin Dormitorio, 20, who died due to blunt force trauma in his barracks in Fort Del Pilar in Baguio City last week.

"Nakikiramay kami sa pamilya ni Cadet Dormitorio, alam namin yung pinagdadaanan ng magulang at pamilya at alam namin mahaba-haba pa yung pagdadaanan nila," Carmina said.
