MANILA- Malacañang welcomed Monday the teaching of a subject that will tackle the martial law era of the Philippines at the premier state university.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said studying one of the darkest chapters in Philippine history is "good."

"That's good. If it's a subject matter, every student should know and learn any subject that concerns governance," Panelo told reporters.

"Philippine Studies 21: Wika, Panitikan, at Kultura sa Ilalim ng Batas Militar" is being proposed as a general subject at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

The teaching of the subject was recently approved by the university council which is composed of regular UP faculty members, according to a ONENews report.

The martial law regime of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. is known as one of the darkest chapters of the country's history as it was marred by corruption and human rights abuses.

The Marcos family is an ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, who had allowed the late strongman's burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in November 2016.
