MANILA - Some airlines have called off several weekend flights to destinations in northern Luzon as Typhoon Ompong barreled closer to the Philippines.

The following flights have been canceled as of Thursday evening:

"Heavy rains are expected in Northern and Central Luzon as well as the National Capital Region throughout the weekend until Monday September 14 to 17," Philippine Airlines (PAL) said in a statement.

Typhoon Ompong is expected to make landfall in Cagayan on Saturday morning and exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday, state weather bureau PAGASA earlier said.

"Affected passengers are strongly advised not to proceed to the airport," Cebu Pacific said.

Cebu Pacific, PAL, and SkyJet said affected passengers may either rebook or refund their tickets.
