ZAMBOANGA CITY- The local government together with the residents of Zamboanga commemorated on Sunday the fifth anniversary of Zamboanga Siege.
In a wreath laying ceremony, Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar remembered the sacrifices of the 20 soldiers, 5 policemen, and 13 civilians during the 21-day long attack.
Climaco vowed to pursue the legal battle against the perpetrators of the 2013 Zamboanga siege until the very end, as she stressed the battlecry “never again Zamboanga City.”
A Concert of Valor also highlighted the event to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in defense of the city and to the men and women in uniform who continue to defend the sovereignty of Zamboanga.
Climaco, likewise, gave gifts to three children who were born on September 9, 2013 and are considered as the "Children of Hope."
The siege perpetrated by hundreds of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members loyal to MNLF leader Nur Misuari, happened on September 9, 2013, when the rebels tried to hoist their Bangsamoro Republik flag at the City Hall.
The attack left over 100,000 people displaced in evacuation centers as soldiers fought for Zamboanga.
