MANILA- Local government officials of Quezon City broke ground Thursday on a new jail facility along Payatas Road in Bagong Silangan.

The facility will be built on a 2.4-hectare lot which officials estimate can house 4,400 inmates.

Bautista said the lot was purchased by the city government for P150 million and expects the jail facility to be built in the next 2 to 3 years.

Once construction is finished, the BJMP said it expects the jail congestion rate in the city to go down by 71.88 percent in the male dormitory, and 53.15 percent for the female dormitory.
