(UPDATED) MANILA—President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday afternoon visited the Open Doors Monument in Israel to cap his historic visit to the Jewish state.

Duterte’s visit to the monument is a fitting end to his Israel trip as this was built by Israel in honor of the Philippines’ “open door” policy for Jews fleeing the Holocaust.

Israel views its ties with the Philippines as special as the latter provided refuge to about 1,300 Jews who escaped the Holocaust. The Philippines also cast a crucial vote in a United Nations (UN) resolution in 1947 that led to the creation of the Jewish state.

The monument, built in 2009, is located in Rishon LeZion, just off Tel Aviv. Designed by Filipino artist Luis “Junyee” Yee, Jr., the monument’s three open doors in increasing heights symbolize the humanitarian deeds and the courage of Filipinos in welcoming the Jews under the open door policy.

Duterte, the first sitting Filipino president to visit Israel, is coming home with $82.9 million in business deals which can create 790 jobs, according to the trade department.

He also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin, and visited the Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.

After his Israel visit, the President will fly to Jordan to seal agreements on labor, defense and foreign affairs.

Duterte’s visit to Jordan will also be the first by a sitting Philippine president. Duterte’s visit will finally reciprocate the visit of the late King Hussein to the Philippines on March 1, 1976, which also marked the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Israel.
