MANILA - A typhoon off Luzon's northern tip will enhance the habagat or southwest monsoon this week, which will bring rains over large swaths of the country, the state weather bureau said Sunday.

Spotted 1,515 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, Typhoon Jebi was packing top sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour and 255 kph gusts, said PAGASA meteorologist Aldczar Aurelio.

If it continues moving northwest at 20 kph, Jebi may enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday afternoon or evening, where it is expected to stay for only a few hours before heading to Japan, Aurelio told radio DZMM.

However, the typhoon will boost the habagat from Monday to Thursday, which will affect Southern Luzon and Visayas, he warned.

For now, Jebi's trough or extension will cause cloudy skies and scattered rains that may trigger floods and landslides in Calabarzon, Bicol and Mimaropa regions and the entire Visayas, said PAGASA.

Metro Manila and the rest of the county may also experience floods and landslides due to localized thunderstorms, the weather agency added.
