DEL GALLEGO, Camarines Sur—A wounded young pygmy sperm whale was stranded on the shores of Pasay village in this town Thursday.

Limuel Mendoza, a fisherman, saw the 2.23 meter-long whale and immediately reported it to local authorities.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources personnel who responded discovered that the whale sustained wounds in the abdominal area.

Authorities believe the whale was injured as it tried to escape a fish entrapment.

The whale eventually died and an autopsy by BFAR staff is underway to determine the main cause of its death.

Authorities said this is the second incident of cetacean stranding in Del Gallego this year after a dwarf sperm whale was also stranded in the area.

The incident in Del Gallego comes a day after a dead short-finned pilot whale was washed ashore Wednesday morning at Sitio Bongsanglay at Gibraltar village in Batuan town, Masbate.

BFAR Bicol spokesperson Nonie Enolva said the 16.1-feet whale had a rope around its dorsal fin and wounds in its tail.

It was buried on site on the same day.
