MANILA – Detained Sen. Leila De Lima and a recently arrested co-accused in one of the drug cases against her have denied knowing each other.

In a penned statement released on Saturday, De Lima reiterated that she does not know Jose Adrian Dera, who the National Bureau of Investigation arrested on Friday in Pampanga. Dera was earlier described as De Lima's nephew.

“For the nth time, I declare that this Jose Adrian Dera, the recently arrested co-accused in one of my 3 drug cases, is not at all related to me. He’s not a nephew or an aide (“alalay”) or whatever. I don’t know this guy from Adam. No connections whatsoever to me," De Lima said.

Dera for his part also denied that he was De Lima’s bagman. He denied involvement in the drug trade inside the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City. He likewise denied claims that he is related to the lawmaker and that he worked for her.

De Lima was arrested in February 2017 on drug charges, with authorities citing testimonies of drug convicts that she was involved in the drug trade at the national penitentiary during her time as justice chief.

The staunch administration critic has been fighting the charges, saying they were part of political persecution.

Dera was also accused by New Bilibid Prison inmates Hans Tan and Peter Co of orchestrating the arrest of the latter's niece on drug charges and demanding millions of pesos and vehicles in exchange for her release.
