MANILA -- Ombudsman Samuel Martires was sworn into office on Monday, starting his 7-year term as the country's chief anti-graft investigator.

Martires replaced former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales. He was former associate justice of the Supreme Court.

Martires should "do what is right," President Rodrigo Duterte said in a July 26 speech. The President also described Martires as "strict" and "bright."

Malacañang last week dismissed Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang for revealing information about an inquiry into alleged unexplained wealth of Duterte and his family.

Carandang has 15 days to appeal his dismissal before the Office of the President. If his plea is rejected, he can elevate the issue before the Court of Appeals, Martires noted at the sidelines of his oath-taking.

The new ombudsman said he trusts Carandang to do the right thing.

"I don't think he's that hardheaded. I see him as a very reasonable guy. I've known him since I was with the Sandiganbayan. I think Carandang will just follow what the law provides," Martires told reporters.

Martires was with his wife, Cecilia, when he took his oath before Supreme Court acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio.
